Calligraphy

Learn the art of writing using a broad point pen. During this session we will learn how to write a Blackletter alphabet. Based on a Gothic hand, this highly decorative alphabet is used for certificates of appreciation, monograms, nameplates and short poems. We will explore basic techniques and equipment used by contemporary calligraphers to produce beautiful and exciting letterforms. Emphasis will be on teaching the correct letter formations with plenty of in class practice. Students will receive Blackletter alphabet exemplars, practice paper and weekly projects to encourage creativity.

Chinese Calligraphy and Brush Painting

Please join us to explore the timeless beauty of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Set aside this special time for yourself to relax and create a place of refuge for your soul while we paint. We will learn how to hold the brush, make basic strokes and painting techniques. Learn to write Chinese words and the meaning behind each character. We will paint traditional Asian subjects such as bamboo, blossoms, orchids, irises and landscapes. There will be painting and calligraphy demonstrations each week along with personal instruction. Patchwork and Quilting String Quilts

String quilts are scrap quilts that consist of narrow strips of fabric sewn to a foundation. Sew for Your Home

A course designed to inspire and teach enhancing the home with original affordable, creative pillows, chair pads, ottoman covers, table covers and window treatments. Subjects to include selecting appropriate fabrics including use of non-traditional fabrics such as tablecloths, laces, bedspreads, curtains and blankets; selecting appropriate fillers, combining patterns and trims and estimating yardage requirements. A variety of pillow styles will be presented such as knife edge, ruffle, flange, fringe, corded, pocket and bolster. Weaving: Floor Loom

Flower Arranging

Join us to learn an artistic but simple style of flower arranging for your home, office or competition. Learn and use the principles of arrangement that will guide you along with a wide range of plant materials and accessories. Our first class will be an introduction and demonstration of the first assignment to be arranged at the next session. Includes a casual critique of all the arrangements each week.
This quarter the class will culminate in a student flower arrangement show and sale, cosponsored by Las Floralias Flower Arrangers of Santa Barbara. The flower show and sale will be on Nov. 22 and 23 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Tannahill Auditorium at the Schott Center.

Enameling: Glass on Metal

Come and enjoy a step-by-step introduction to the ancient art of enameling on metal with highly qualified, friendly instructor Margot Niederer. Start by exploring the basic principles of enameling by applying and melting powdered glass onto the surface of copper sheet metal in artistic patterns. You’ll also learn a variety of more advanced techniques including using gold and silver foils, cloisonne and champlevé. Enameling is easy to learn, and the results are outstanding. Southwest Style Jewelry Making

All are welcome to come on in and learn how to make an attractive piece of Southwest Style Jewelry with the guidance of a very knowledgeable instructor, Norm Gutshall. Students will be given instruction on how to design, saw, bend wires, solder, cut and inlay colorful gemstones to create beautiful jewelry. Norm also has lots of wonderful examples of completed pieces, which he brings to class to inspire students.
