Antique American Furniture and Folk Art: 1620-1920

The first hour of the class features lecture, slides, and physical demonstrations of “American Furniture & Folk Art”. We’ll cover topics such as 18th and 19th Century American paintings, primitive portraits, marine paintings, folk scenes, still lifes and Hudson River Valley Paintings. Other focuses include 18th-19th Century American regional furniture, painted furniture, sculptural and figural pieces from weathervanes to retablos, and the beginnings of “Outsider Art.” While studying regional furniture, we compare high-style city pieces of the William and Mary, Queen Anne, Chippendale and Federal periods to High Country pieces of the same eras. We will also explore a major museum collection. The second hour physically examines the myriad of art and antiques that you own or collect. Students can bring any objects to class, and are not limited to the American Furniture & Folk Art theme. Although we discuss elements of connoisseurship, we do not value pieces in class. Collectors will have an opportunity to talk about their collections. Includes a field trip to a major museum, TBA in class.
