STEP
Services
Outreach. You may have read about the STEP Program in
flyers and posters, or friends or teachers may have told you about it. STEP
is a new and very exciting program of choices, guidance, and opportunities.
We actively reach out to recruit students like you who will benefit from
the personal attention we provide.
Registration. All
registered Continuing Education students who have a goal of obtaining
marketable skills and/or improving their basic skill level are encouraged
to participate in the STEP Program. Introductory information will be
presented in many classes, and students may request information packetes in
the STEP Office at the Wake and Schott Centers.
Orientation. The
orientation is a very important part of the STEP Program. During this first
phase, you receive your STEP Planning Guide, and we show you how to use it.
We describe many free programs and services that can help you plan your
educational and employment goals.
Advising. An advisor
will assist you in finding your employment direction. You will meet and
talk with your advisor in order to write your Individual Career Educational
Plan (ICEP). This plan outlines what you will need to do to achieve you
career or educational goal. The plan identifies and lists the classes
important to that goal.
You can choose from more
than 800 Continuing Education classes and SBCC vocational programs. Your
advisor can ensure that your classes are appropriate and lead to your goal
efficiently. To reach your career goal, you may not need a certificate or
degree. You may choose to begin your enrollment through the Continuing
Education Program. When you are academically prepared, you may wish to take
courses for credit at SBCC. You may need to take many "steps" to
get there, or only a few. The STEP Program provides a "ladder" to
cross over to the credit programs offered at Santa Barbara City College.
Assessment. One of
the best ways to get somewhere is to know more about where you are now.
Assessment is one way to find out about yourself and your starting point.
Assessments that will help
you to indentify your areas of interest, your skills, and your preferred
working conditions will help you learn more about yourself. Your advisor or
your teachers may suggest some other helpful assessments. These are not
pass/fail exams, and the resutls will not keep you from going to school!
They will help you get more focused on your goals. You may find out more
about assessments from your advisor or at the STEP Office.
"Laddering"
The STEP Program is especially designed to guide you in
selecting classes from both the Santa Barbara City College credit and
Continuing Education non-credit classes. STEPs purpose is to assist
you in obtaining the training and preparation you need to be more
successful in your work. The STEP Program not only helps you identify your
strongest interests, but also can ladder credit and Continuing
Education courses together for you Individual Career Education Plan (ICEP).
The Laddering
concept means that you may go from Continuing Education to City College and
back again, taking only the classes you really want and can benefit from
the most. You do not have to declare a Major or commit to a certificate
program. We can develop your ICEP to include just what you need and are
interested in, and we can orient you to the college system so that the
transition from Adult Education to credit coursework is relatively easy.
STEP can help you learn exactly what you need to get to your
goal.
